It reminds me of the time that guy on our flight back from Hawaii talked at me for 5 hours straight (and I let him) even though I desperately needed to study. It’s because befriending the threat, fawning, and acting over-accommodating made us feel safe at some point (e.g., safe from rejection- though this is an illusion right?). My favorite phrase these days is “safe in the unsafest way.” (Emotionally.)
